Interview with Furi Kuri's captain, Chinky

And finally the last team interview before the full action begins, and who else to finish it off but with the organiser himself, Chinky!

G’day Fred, mind introducing yourself to the Canberra DOTA2 scene?            Hey all I'm Fred aka Chinky, and am the organiser for this tournament as well as participating with my team Furi Kuri.

I've been gaming for quite some time and dabbled in Starcraft, Counter-Strike (CS 1.5, CZ, CS 1.6 then CS:GO) and World of Warcraft.  I had success with CS, having made it to the nationals but I definitely can’t compare to the likes of Venom from Rat Doto.  Also got the chance to travel overseas thanks to people I met through gaming.

I'm also Asian and popular to contrary belief, I'm actually a fantastic driver!  Shout out to that Queensland MP for noting the Asian people.
The glory days of CS for Chinky
Are you able to introduce your team mates as well and their roles in the team?
It’s probably best to go with a intro on each player so here goes:

LaosPowerHouse aka Steven Segal, he’s our carry out in the DOTA world and even though he is on Deadly Ground, he goes Out For Justice and has proven that he’s Hard To Kill.  He slashes through the jungle like The Glimmer Man and leaves Exit Wounds for his foes. People trying to catch him end up Half Past Dead as he makes the team feel Under Siege.

ShibataPlex aka Ol Faithful, you want You want calculated consistency? You want clockwork precision? You want no mistakes? You want really long shiny hair which questions your masculinity? Well then you want ShibataPlex in the game at all times. Like your granddaddy’s pocket watch Shibata’s always on time. Doing our draft and picking the right line-ups, coordinating attacks and telling us how good we look and how he’s noticed we've been lifting. I’d call him Mr Right if I was more comfortable with my own sexuality and didn't think it would sound super g@ybones.

Goldenboy aka Wunderkind is a malevolent 3. He puts on a clinic out there, shutting down team’s penetration and playing a great 3. He showed me that DOTA isn't played with the hands. It’s played with the body and the eyes. And the heart. And you have to use your mind of course to tell your body and eyes what to do. And obviously hands to an extent do come into play. And the arms they’re attached. And you can’t do those things with a head, which is where the aforementioned mind is. And a face. Anyhoos, long story short, GoldenBoy’s the whole package…….. ladiez.

Raxisus and myself are the ultimate odd couple out there. Complimenting each other perfectly. Raxisus healing the team at the right time, myself, warding the map for that sweet Intel. Raxisus making sure no one gets left behind, me covering the team in smoke like we were on the Chronic tour. Raxisus leaving his dishes on the couch, me cleaning them up. Raxisus leaving the toilet seat up, me putting it down.  You get the drift basically…..

Your probable reaction.

How long have you played together with your current team?We only got together when I started organising this tournament and we've only just managed to practice 2 days a week since Shibata has modelling commitments and doesn't get back until 10pm or so.  It’s been a fun ride so far and now that the tournament is here, I hope it continues and we’re not a one hit wonder like Trinidad James.

We’re bracing up for a pretty big solid tournament, what are you most looking forward to?
I'm looking forward to creating a community from this and making this DOTA and other gaming scene grow in Canberra and hopefully Australia.  It’s nice to see everyone get out there and just have a go and afterwards have some light banter.  Most of all, FRIENDSHIP!  Because if there’s one thing to remember; it’s nice to be important but it’s more important to be nice.

We have 3 interstate teams competing in this tournament, with the strongest one of the lot, being AVANT YMC.  Are you familiar with any of them and how do you fancy your chances against them?
Being the organiser has given me a chance to familiarise myself with all the interstate teams so yeah I've gotten to know them and have a fair idea on how good they are.  I'm not gonna say how I rate our team against them but we’ll give it our best.

What are your thoughts on the Australian DOTA 2 scene?
Pretty low, it’s not a good thing when our best DOTA 2 team can’t put up a fight against Tier 1 teams around the world.  The only time I really took note when was we had Absolute Legends and Natural 9 playing solid DOTA back then.
Nowadays, we've got a big hurdle ahead of us especially when you think about our infrastructure and how we’re not really close to any of our international neighbours (ping issues).  It would probably help if we had more National LAN tournaments like we did with Counter-Strike.  That I feel would help immensely in producing more talent in the DOTA 2 scene.

Oh, and people contributing to the community and not thinking about their own pockets as well.  Because there are times when people just are too greedy and that destroys the community as a result.

I haven’t really been pumped about the Australia gaming teams since the days of f-zer0 and iCHOR but we’ll see how things go from here.

Back to our own local scene in Canberra, is there any teams that you’re familiar with and respect?
Every team that has registered through here, I am familiar with now.  I wasn’t really familiar before bar two teams, LoLCats and 4 + 1. I expect every team to be playing to their best abilities and respect them for coming out and playing in this tournament.  I've enjoyed the networking exercise because of this.

Will we see you in future Canberra DOTA 2 tournaments?
No doubt and it helps that I run the show and have great fantastic people behind this.  I'm talking about every team, shoutcaster and the netcafes behind this.

Fred, thank you for your time, is there anything further that you’d like to add or any shoutouts?
First of all, I’d like to thank our sponsors Tt-eSports and Redskins for their contributions, The Barracks and Sky Internet Café for hosting the tournament, and the 18 teams participating in this.  Because without you guys it wouldn't be possible, the shoutcasters and the followers/readers for taking the time to read this.

Interview with DOTA 2Caster, Kathified

Sailor Scouts were a team that had registered for this tournament.  However, when that plan fell through, Kathified volunteered herself as a caster.  Being the sole lady among the men may be daunting for some, but not for this lady who gives her 100% commitment to the game and to her team.  Here to answer the questions is Kathified!

Player profile
Name:  Kathy Kuestler
Age: 23

Essential tournament food: Caramello Koalas and Watermelon Gatorade

G’day kathified, mind introducing yourself to the Canberra DOTA2 scene?
Hi everyone, this is kathified/Sailor Jupiter. I go to uni, coach chess to kids, shoot arrows at targets and play DoTA although sometimes I wish I could play uni, shoot kids and coach targets. I started playing DoTA2 maybe 2 years ago and I started casting only relatively recently.

We’ll be hearing your commentary in games at the tournament, how would you describe your style of casting?
Well the only casting experience I have is with a more knowledge co-caster, like at MAQLAN and in the DiH guild, so I tend to do the play-by-plays whilst relying on them for analysis.
Kathified in DOTA 2 action
Are you able to tell us more about your shoutcasting and gaming history?
My partner 'juice' made me do it. Just kidding, I was genuinely curious about the game and started playing after watching him play every night with his friends. After about 140 games as Lich I played branched out and played Lion and Jakiro with the DoTA is Hard guild and sometimes joined juice casting the weekly in-houses. Then last month I played with '50 Shades of Dave' where we came 3rd at MAQLAN (http://challonge.com/MaqLAN_Dota2) and casted the finals between juice's team and Sonogong's team.
No peer pressure here for Kathified
You were meant to be competing under the team Sailor Scouts, what caused you to bail out on that idea?
Sailor Scouts was only formed at the beginning of this year with members from Sydney and RADelaide and not everyone could make the interstate journey and with stand-ins our team was lacking the synergy expected in such a high level competition.

Would you like to give your quick top 4 predictions for this tournament?
1. 4FM, if not then
2. 4FM, but if that's not possible then
3. 4FM, and if that's not in their reach then
4. 4FM but juice will have to walk back to Sydney
Kathified's new fragrance, inspired by 4FM

We can already see 4FM are cleary the team that you’ll be supporting. Any other teams that are you familiar with in this tournament?
Unfortunately I do not know the Canberra scene very well but I always enjoy supporting the ones who are playing at their best.

The popular question, what can the Australian DOTA 2 community do to increase the level of competition in Australia to match that against tier 1 teams in the world?
More LANs, more online tournaments, more prize money and maybe a DoTA2 dorm.

You’ll be joined by ColdBlood and OnlyLogic as part of the casting crew.  Can you give us a preview of what’s in store?

I haven't cast with them before so hopefully we don't cut each other off too much. I look forward to learning a thing or two from OnlyLogic.

Will we see you in future Canberra DOTA2 tournaments?
Probably, and if you do you will see me...
Fighting evil by moonlight,
Ganking lanes by daylight,
Never running from a team fight,
She is the one named Sailor Moon.

Kathified, thank you for your time, is there anything further that you’d like to add or any shoutouts?
Firstly, thank you Chinky for conducting these interviews and building up rapport of teams in the community. And shoutouts to Fanatic and Pixie aka Sailor Mercury and Sailor Moon.

Interview with DOTA Caster, ColdBlood

ColdBlood from GameStah will be joining OnlyLogic as a caster for the Canberra DOTA 2 Tournament.  Having covered events such as ReSpawn LAN, ColdBlood will be lending his voice and doing his best to provide the users with his take on games.  Here to answer our questions, is the caster himself, ColdBlood.

G’day Dylan, mind introducing yourself to the Canberra DOTA2 scene?
Hi friends, my name is ColdBlood. I'm super excited to be promoting esports in the nation's capital, & am hoping to have many opportunities to do so

We’ll be hearing your commentary in games at the tournament, how would you describe your style of casting?
I have an interesting of play-by-play prowess, along with far too much knowledge because I'm a big nerd ;) I can normally keep up a running commentary with a decent spread of vocabulary, then ask various questions to my analyst for engaging discussion during downtime. I believe Onlylogic will be covering the action in games I cast with him (which he is great at) so I'll be brushing up on my post-TI4 game knowledge so I can be theorycrafting what the Canberrans are doing.

ColdBlood is in full effect!
Are you able to tell us more about your shoutcasting and gaming history?
Certainly, I began gaming veeeeeeery young with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which remains one of my most favourite games of all time. My first competitive gaming was in Left 4 Dead. I asked a friend if he wanted to play some versus with me. He said he couldn't because he was watching his team play a Cybergamer match. I had no idea what this was, so I asked for a link.

After an hour & a half of gruelling action, I was hooked. I watched as much L4D twitch action as I could. A few weeks later, this friend mentioned to me the team was recruiting. So I gave it a go, & they were impressed. I played with them for a long while, until the L4D scene died down. I played L4D2 with some other people I met, but not as fervently.

A shoutcasting friend I'd made during my time as a pro L4D player called Chrisis played L4D2 with me alot. He is one of the CEOs of Gamestah. When I told him how tired I was of playing, he suggested I give casting it a go. I did so, & it was magnificent. Left 4 Dead 2 has so much action always, that I developed a really strong flow with my casting.

As Left 4 Dead 2 died down, I was getting more into the MOBA scene with League of Legends. I begun casting that a couple years ago, & decided I'd pick up Dota 2 to assist the Gamestah casters with it.
Obviously, I really enjoyed it. I've been casting Dota 2 since August 2013. I started with Lich, & my favourite hero is Spectre. I have high hopes for the MOBA scene in the ACT to continue growing, & will contribute anyway I can.

Any reasons why you are not competing within a team?
There is a big difference between knowledge/ability to talk, & mechanical skill. Let's leave it at that ;)

Would you like to give your quick top 4 predictions for this tournament?
It's going to be a close one for this tournament but in no particular order, my picks are Avant YMC, RAD, 4FM and Sydney Titans who look in fine form.

You’ve been doing work for GameStah for quite some time now, what’s the perks for covering for such a company?
The biggest perk is that it is run by some amazing guys that care more about the growth of Esports in Aus/NZ than making money. Far too many Australians try to monetise & bicker with others. Gamestah is all about the community, which I absolutely love. Since Gamestah was the very first Australian casting company which began 10 years ago, they are highly experienced & assist us with anything we may need help with. They are great at getting casting gigs because they are so sincere to event organisers. Gamestah does whatever it can to add to a tournament, not take it over.

The popular question, what can the Australian DOTA 2 community do to increase the level of competition in Australia to match that against tier 1 teams in the world?
First thing is dedication. Tier 1 teams in all esports practice A LOT. If Australian players spend their time streaming solo ranked or sitting around drinking, they will never compare to any other scene. As the scene gets bigger with events such as this, it will become more viable to put one's full time into becoming a top tier team.

Next is professionalism. Australian competitive gamers are notorious for having terrible attitudes. It's ok to have fun, but constant abuse, swearing & mucking around are highly detrimental. Take a look at the Dota 2 International, or the League of Legends LCS. That is top quality production value. If we want to be involved with that, we need the maturity to match.

My last point, which ties in with the first, is commitment. Alot of Australian comps, particularly ones for fun or with low prize pools, will have entire teams not show up for games. There is some highly dedicated, brilliant Aussies/Kiwis who do turn up, & they shouldn't be punished by others who decide they can't be bothered. Imagine how we'd feel if a team was sent from Australia to represent us at a multi-nation tournament, & they decided not to go. I doubt that would happen honestly, but we need to stop doing that at our foundations, which are these small tournaments, so that we can be respectable at the highest level.

You’ll be joined by OnlyLogic as part of the casting crew.  Can you give us a preview of what’s in store?
Onlylogic is a great guy. We met at the Defense of the Australians first grand final, in which he did a good job casting. I was there to support the organisers. We joined forces for the ANU comp a couple months ago, which made leaps & bounds for Canberra esports. We had some good synergy, & together we can make this tournament exciting to watch for all.

Will we see you in future Canberra DOTA2 tournaments?
 YESSSSSSSSSSSS

Dylan, thank you for your time, is there anything further that you’d like to add or any shoutouts?
Shoutout to Ragnarok & Domika, two Dota 2 casters who helped me alot when I begun the steep climb of learning Dota. Shoutout to Fredison Vu Tang Nuykhen for the top job keeping everything together. If anyone in Australia or New Zealand wants casting at their event, make sure to contact us at www.facebook.com/gamestah

Interview with DOTA Caster, OnlyLogic

A familiar face in one of Canberra's DOTA 2 scene will be casting the games for this tournament.  OnlyLogic has been covering the scene for tournaments such as MASCA Cyberwars and ANU DOTA 2 competitions.

Canberra teams will be familiar with his work and it was best that we gave a taste of what's in store for those who weren't.  To answer our questions, is Charles aka OnlyLogic.

G’day Charles, mind introducing yourself to the Canberra DOTA2 scene?
I’m OnlyLogic, caster, general gamer and student at ANU. I’ve played Dota 2 for just over a year and have been gaming since I was 14. I stream weekly, game daily, but my love is in administrating and casting tournaments for various games, as well as competing.

OnlyLogic's literal interpretation of Blue Steel
We’ll be hearing your commentary in games at the tournament, how would you describe your style of casting?
I’m a very loud caster. I try to make even the most boring situation a fun one by pointing out every detail and commenting on it. I’m told that I can sometimes over-hype things but I think that’s necessary and can be balanced with the right co-caster.

Are you able to tell us more about your shoutcasting and gaming history?
I started gaming competitively when I was 14, playing for clans such as .S😖. and cbb in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Call of Duty 4 respectively. After a long pause, I took up competitive gaming again recently, playing for Biohazard in Tribes: Ascend. My skill wasn’t nearly as good as the past and I transitioned into amateur casting, doing mainly PUGs and scrims. When I saw an opportunity to join the massive bandwagon that was Dota 2, I took what I had learned from Tribes and applied it in the Defense of the Australians. I’ve loved it and will be casting for a long time in the future.

Any reasons why you are not competing within a team?
My skill level isn’t nearly as good as some of these players that have dedicated years into their games. As much as I would love to become a big competitor, I simply don’t have the time and my strength is in my patience and interpersonal skills, making me a much better admin and caster.

Would you like to give your quick top 4 predictions for this tournament?
Avant:YMC are a very big-name team in Australia and are my favourites for top spot. As for top Canberra teams, BoysBoys and RAD both shine in any tournament they participate in and it’ll be a close call between them for second place. I’m afraid I’m not too familiar with any of the other teams, but I hear 4FM is quite strong.

We can already see BoysBoys have a lot of love for you, so that counts as 1. Any other teams that are you familiar with in this tournament?
RAD is the other Canberra team I’m familiar with. I’ve played with some of the players before and seen and cast many of their matches. I’ve also had the privilege of meeting some of the Avant:YMC crew personally at the last Defense of the Australians LAN I went to and I know their potential not only in this LAN but in Australia. Although I’m not familiar with the other teams, I look forward to getting to know the Canberra scene a bit more and meeting the players.

The popular question, what can the Australian DOTA 2 community do to increase the level of competition in Australia to match that against tier 1 teams in the world?
Australia’s isolation from the rest of the world makes it hard for any serious international tournaments to include Australian teams. The first step to fixing this is to let the world know that Australia has a big scene and wants to be sponsored to be able to attend these international events. This ultimately comes down to two things: Skill and popularity. Skill is rapidly improving and there’s no doubt about the popularity. All we have to do is let the world know!

You’ll be joined by ColdBlood as part of the casting crew.  Can you give us a preview of what’s in store?
I’ve cast with ColdBlood before and we work very well together. Although he’s relatively new to Dota 2, he understands the mechanics and balances me out nicely when it comes to overdoing it on the volume. Expect big plays, exciting casts and brilliant meta analysis.

Will we see you in future Canberra DOTA2 tournaments?
Dota 2 isn’t quite my game, but I’m massively in support of growing eSports. If I can be present in any scene that supports the growth of gaming into the eSport generation, you can bet I’ll be there!

Charles, thank you for your time, is there anything further that you’d like to add or any shoutouts?
A big thanks to my fans on Facebook, Twitch and YouTube for the huge burst of popularity I’ve had over the past week. I love doing what I do knowing people are more supportive of eSports and enlightened by gaming. Also to PyrenZero who, although no longer casts with me, will always be my gaming buddy.

OnlyLogic, keeping an eye out for Canberra eSports!

Tournament update and details

A big thank you to everyone who has assisted me in registering their teams on challonge and uploaded a team logo.

If possible, may I please request that all teams have their team banners prepared for in game purposes.  This will assist with DOTA TV and advertising which team is playing for the masses.  If you need guides on how to do this then read the following links (courtesy of YaDig from Omega Squadron):
The tournament will be played at the two internet cafes of The Barracks and Sky Internet Cafe.

The tournament will begin on Saturday with the first 2 games side by side at 4pm at the Barracks featuring the two teams below.  Both teams will require to pay their registration on this day and there will be no need to BYOC for these teams.
4pm Saturday 30th August @ The Barracks
The next set of games will start on Sunday 31st August at 9am and the following teams shown below will play at Sky Internet Cafe.

Do note, that team Rat Doto will play the winner of BoysBoys vs Sponsored by Centrelink. While the next game at Sky Cafe will start at 10am between bok choy gaming and Avant YMC.
10am Sunday 31st August @ Sky Internet Cafe
While at the Barracks, we will also kick off at 9am and have the following teams listed below play.  A very important note is that RAD, Awww Narr, and Yowie Power will need to setup their PC's earlier and not at 9am.  This will cause a big delay and these teams will need to come between 8-8:30am to start setup ASAP.

RAD will play the winner of Freedom Isn't Free vs Omega Squadron
9am Sunday 31st August @ The Barracks
More updates to come later on.

Interview with LoLCats captain, _zen

One of the familiar faces of DOTA returns to this tournament but with some minor changes.  LoLCats last show was during the WCG qualifiers in the ACT when they battled it out against the many other teams that were vying a spot for the Nationals in Sydney.

Now wiser and a little older, the old school LoLCats return and hope to show some form and dominance among the new faces on Sunday.

To answer our questions, we had David aka _zen answer our questions.

G’day Dave, mind introducing yourself to the Canberra DOTA2 scene?
We are a bit of a mixed bag of old school and new to competitive dota, there are elements of the original WCG squad and a mix of known performers coming together to try and relive the glory days!

The glory days at WCG Australian Nationals 2007

Are you able to introduce your team mates as well and their roles in the team?
House: The triple threat he will be running our drafting and playing our offlane or carry or mid. He is as deadly as he is baby faced, he was an essential part of the original WCG team. He is without a doubt the most prepared of the team for this tournament often watching 1-2 competitive games a night. If you see what appears to be an unattended 6 ft 3 Child that will be him, please do not call the police!!

Loach: Loach is a SC wiz kid who extended his skill set to include being the worlds biggest Rat/Turtle hybrid, he is one player you wont ever count out because he generally doesn't care how dirty the approach as long as he wins! Alternating with House for the Carry/Offlane or running a 4 spot ganker/roamer. In between games i expect loach to be offering free massages and handing out coupons to his "day spa" my advise is to not accept.

Pupfish:  Pupfish and I are high school mates, we have been gaming together for 13 years and two things never cease to amaze me: His ability to sleep in any environment and his ability to consume chilli related products not fit for human consumption, he will be running our mid or safelane carry. Our biggest risk is that on the way to the tournament he has a narcoleptic fit and wakes up on a crab fishing boat.

Dickie: The new kid on the block, what he lacks in experience he makes up for in deaths... We have been friends for 15 years and gaming together the whole time, Dickie has stepped up to fill a large hole left by (Err) RoseytheMook who was not able to play this tournament. He will be running a roaming ganker/support/offlane for the tournament. As Dickies registered career i will be ensuring he has enough to drink and wears his helmet during all the matches so I don't think we will have any problems.

zen_: I have been lurking in the shadows of canberra gaming for many a year, attending the ACT LAN's and CanCon events i have always loved playing games at the more competitive levels. I will be playing the "Unmanned" Role from our team most likely a hard support or ganker. I take pride in my role as team caterer feeding the hungry masses so that my team might live! I will no doubt give several carries a good start to the game and quietly blame my team whilst relying on them to carry me!

How long have you played together with your current team?
Each team mate varies but on average together we are quite new but we have all played with each other for several years.

You managed to represent the ACT at the World Cyber Games (WCG) Nationals, do you think you still have what it takes to compete at this level?
Unfortunately with a few team mates missing we are not at the same standard we were for the WCG qualifier, that being said we were all incredibly hungover during that tournament and I'm sure there are several areas we could improve on! In order to get back to that level we would need to really work on our synergy as we are all capable players but haven't had the time to gel/get to know how we work as a team.

The result of being hungover? A TROPHY!
From the WCG Nationals to this DOTA tournament, what are your expectations for the level of competition? Will you breeze through this?
I think its going to be hard, there are some really good players coming to this tournament and I'm looking forward to trying to out think and out play them.

The interstate teams coming to compete in this tournament will do their best to beat the teams in Canberra.  Do you know much about these teams and their skill level?
Mainly from my dota oracle House i have learnt we have some steep competition, that being said every dog has its day and I'm hoping it will be ours come Sunday!

Back to our own local scene in Canberra, is there any teams that you’re familiar with and respect?
I was always big into the CS scene for Canberra and it was good seeing some of the old faces transition across to dota. I am sure there are a few elements of the old guard hanging on and i look forward to vsing them again. There is no team in particular i recognise by name but I'm sure ill be able to spot a few familiar faces come game day! I do recall PiG being one of the biggest threats the last time we played and I wonder if they are going to be around? Or perhaps Seffier has a new crew making a run this year.

We expect you guys to be the equivalent of Uncle Drew on the basketball courts, you think you can show these new cats some tricks?
Its definitely going to be all about buckets come Sunday and i hope to put a few highlight reel plays together. I am also looking forward to seeing how people draft this tournament I'm expecting to see a few different strategies and some filthy rat dota!

Will we see you in future Canberra DOTA2 tournaments?
Without a doubt, with a bit of notice I will try and organise a true WCG team to attend, it would be a good reason to get a few of the old crew back together.

Dave, thank you for your time, is there anything further that you’d like to add or any shoutouts? No shout outs I will say that i can't wait to see how Canberra has progressed!
