Interview with LoLCats captain, _zen

One of the familiar faces of DOTA returns to this tournament but with some minor changes.  LoLCats last show was during the WCG qualifiers in the ACT when they battled it out against the many other teams that were vying a spot for the Nationals in Sydney.

Now wiser and a little older, the old school LoLCats return and hope to show some form and dominance among the new faces on Sunday.

To answer our questions, we had David aka _zen answer our questions.

G’day Dave, mind introducing yourself to the Canberra DOTA2 scene?
We are a bit of a mixed bag of old school and new to competitive dota, there are elements of the original WCG squad and a mix of known performers coming together to try and relive the glory days!

The glory days at WCG Australian Nationals 2007

Are you able to introduce your team mates as well and their roles in the team?
House: The triple threat he will be running our drafting and playing our offlane or carry or mid. He is as deadly as he is baby faced, he was an essential part of the original WCG team. He is without a doubt the most prepared of the team for this tournament often watching 1-2 competitive games a night. If you see what appears to be an unattended 6 ft 3 Child that will be him, please do not call the police!!

Loach: Loach is a SC wiz kid who extended his skill set to include being the worlds biggest Rat/Turtle hybrid, he is one player you wont ever count out because he generally doesn't care how dirty the approach as long as he wins! Alternating with House for the Carry/Offlane or running a 4 spot ganker/roamer. In between games i expect loach to be offering free massages and handing out coupons to his "day spa" my advise is to not accept.

Pupfish:  Pupfish and I are high school mates, we have been gaming together for 13 years and two things never cease to amaze me: His ability to sleep in any environment and his ability to consume chilli related products not fit for human consumption, he will be running our mid or safelane carry. Our biggest risk is that on the way to the tournament he has a narcoleptic fit and wakes up on a crab fishing boat.

Dickie: The new kid on the block, what he lacks in experience he makes up for in deaths... We have been friends for 15 years and gaming together the whole time, Dickie has stepped up to fill a large hole left by (Err) RoseytheMook who was not able to play this tournament. He will be running a roaming ganker/support/offlane for the tournament. As Dickies registered career i will be ensuring he has enough to drink and wears his helmet during all the matches so I don't think we will have any problems.

zen_: I have been lurking in the shadows of canberra gaming for many a year, attending the ACT LAN's and CanCon events i have always loved playing games at the more competitive levels. I will be playing the "Unmanned" Role from our team most likely a hard support or ganker. I take pride in my role as team caterer feeding the hungry masses so that my team might live! I will no doubt give several carries a good start to the game and quietly blame my team whilst relying on them to carry me!

How long have you played together with your current team?
Each team mate varies but on average together we are quite new but we have all played with each other for several years.

You managed to represent the ACT at the World Cyber Games (WCG) Nationals, do you think you still have what it takes to compete at this level?
Unfortunately with a few team mates missing we are not at the same standard we were for the WCG qualifier, that being said we were all incredibly hungover during that tournament and I'm sure there are several areas we could improve on! In order to get back to that level we would need to really work on our synergy as we are all capable players but haven't had the time to gel/get to know how we work as a team.

The result of being hungover? A TROPHY!
From the WCG Nationals to this DOTA tournament, what are your expectations for the level of competition? Will you breeze through this?
I think its going to be hard, there are some really good players coming to this tournament and I'm looking forward to trying to out think and out play them.

The interstate teams coming to compete in this tournament will do their best to beat the teams in Canberra.  Do you know much about these teams and their skill level?
Mainly from my dota oracle House i have learnt we have some steep competition, that being said every dog has its day and I'm hoping it will be ours come Sunday!

Back to our own local scene in Canberra, is there any teams that you’re familiar with and respect?
I was always big into the CS scene for Canberra and it was good seeing some of the old faces transition across to dota. I am sure there are a few elements of the old guard hanging on and i look forward to vsing them again. There is no team in particular i recognise by name but I'm sure ill be able to spot a few familiar faces come game day! I do recall PiG being one of the biggest threats the last time we played and I wonder if they are going to be around? Or perhaps Seffier has a new crew making a run this year.

We expect you guys to be the equivalent of Uncle Drew on the basketball courts, you think you can show these new cats some tricks?
Its definitely going to be all about buckets come Sunday and i hope to put a few highlight reel plays together. I am also looking forward to seeing how people draft this tournament I'm expecting to see a few different strategies and some filthy rat dota!

Will we see you in future Canberra DOTA2 tournaments?
Without a doubt, with a bit of notice I will try and organise a true WCG team to attend, it would be a good reason to get a few of the old crew back together.

Dave, thank you for your time, is there anything further that you’d like to add or any shoutouts? No shout outs I will say that i can't wait to see how Canberra has progressed!
